Getting to Bhutan

Bhutan's national carrier is Druk Air, and it currently has a monopoly on flights in and out of Bhutan, except from Kathmandu. There is one airport at Paro, about an hour's drive from the capital, Thimphu (although there are some internal airports at the planning stage).  You can fly in from Delhi, Kathmandu, Calcutta, or Bangkok. There are also occasional flights via Dhaka and Gaya and a route to Guwahati has also recently opened up.  The Delhi flight runs three times a week and takes around two hours.  Kathmandu flights are  more frequent.  In addition another airline, Buddha Air, which is an established Nepalese airline, has just started flights on this route and promises daily flights.  Flight time from Kathmandu is just over one hour.  Druk Air's Bangkok flight comes in and out daily via Calcutta, Dhaka, Guwahati or Gaya.  For more information on the flight schedules see the Druk Air website or ask us and we will happily explain further.

The price of Paro flights is charged on top of the tour price.  Current rates for return flights are US$405 (Kathmandu), US$430 (Calcutta), US$700 (Delhi) and US$870 (Bangkok) but the seats are priced in local currency and paid for in US$ so the price fluctuates daily and the final price can only be confirmed on issuing the tickets.  Discounts are available in off season.  Druk Air flights can now be booked directly, but without the option to hold seats to secure them while you make the other arrangements for your booking, so it may be easier for you if we do the flight bookings for you.  You will need to arrange your own international flights to your chosen point of entry to Bhutan. You should bear in mind that Druk Air schedules are subject to frequent change, and often at very short notice, so discuss with us before you make long haul bookings - if you can arrange flexible tickets it is advisable to do so.

It is also possible to enter or leave Bhutan by road via the Indian state of West Bengal, at Phuntsholing on the Indian border. This allows you to combine a trip to Bhutan with some time in Darjeeling or Sikkim.  Phuntsholing is three or four hours' drive from the nearest Indian airport in Bagdogra, and about six hours' drive from Thimphu.  You can also enter or leave the country at the south-eastern town of Samdrup Jongkhar.  From here it is a short drive to Guwahati which has flights to a number of Indian cities.

There is also a fledgeling domestic operation that commenced test flights in December 2011.  This will offer flights from Paro to Bumthang and to Yongphola in eastern Bhutan and return.  We don't yet consider this service to be sufficiently stable to risk timetabling our clients' trips around it, but we are obviously keeping the situation under review.  You should also bear in mind that there are no vehicles or guides and drivers readily available in Bumthang or the east so all services have to be sourced from the capital, Thimphu.  This presents logistical difficulties in arranging a tour which includes an internal flight and also leads to additional costs arising from the provision of duplicate services.

Passports and visas

Your passport needs to have at least 6 months' validity.  You will also need to make sure that you have a spare page for a visa for Bhutan, as well as space for the visas for any countries you are visiting en route.  If you need to get a new passport please do so well before your planned trip so that there is no delay in applying for your Bhutanese visa.

You will need to fill in a form for us with some personal information, and send us a scanned copy of the identity page of your passport, and then we will apply for your visa for you around a month before your trip and as long as your funds have arrived.

We will send you a copy of the confirmation showing that your visa has been authorised. Your actual visa will be issued on arrival at Paro or Phuntsholing.  If you are entering via Phuntsholing you need to bring 2 passport photos with you.  Visas can be extended for up to six months in Thimphu if necessary on payment of a further $15.

Don't forget to make enquiries about visa requirements for any countries you are passing through en route even if you are only in transit.

Cancellation policy
Druk Air flights

Druk Air flights are now priced in local currency, but we have to pay for the tickets in US$ on issue. This means that the price fluctuates a little depending on the exchange rate on the day we come to issue the tickets, so our quote on your first enquiry will be indicative only.  If you prefer you can book your tickets online by credit card and then the price will be fixed and you will not have to send us money for the flights. However you may prefer it if we issue your tickets as then we can keep you up to date on time changes and reconfirm your seats for you. Let us know when you come to book if you want to sort out the flight tickets yourself.

The ticketing system used by Druk Air allows us to hold seats for a period so you have time to decide on your dates and organise your international flights before we have to issue the tickets.  For travel dates which are more than 45 days away the ticketing date will be 30 days from the date of booking.  For travel dates less than 45 days but more than 14 days away the ticketing date will be 7 days from the date of booking.  For travel dates within 14 days there will be no ticketing date and the flights must be paid for to secure the seats.

A full refund of the ticket price can be obtained for cancellations made up to 30 days before travel, subject to payment of an administration charge of US$25. Between 10 and 30 days before travel 50% of the ticket price will be refunded (again subject to payment of a US$25 charge). For tickets cancelled within 10 days of travel no refund will be available and the US$25 charge is incurred.  We will issue tickets in advance of payment being made on condition you agree to reimburse any cancellation charges incurred.

Once tickets have been issued, date changes can be made up to 7 days beforehand on payment of a US$10 administration charge.    There is no charge for date changes in business class.  Rerouting of tickets is permitted once, but the ticket will then be stamped non-reroutable and non-refundable.  Route changes to a sector with a lower airfare attract a US$25 administration fee.  No fee applies to route changes to a sector with a higher fare.

Tours
Once booked, Blue Poppy tours that are cancelled are subject to the following cancellation charges:
  • Earlier than 30 days before the start of the tour programme: no charge
  • Between 30 and 21 days before the start: 10% of the rates
  • Between 21 and 14 days before the start: 15% of the rates
  • Between 14 and 7 days before the start: 30% of the rates
  • Less than 7 days before the start or cancellation without notice: 50% of the rates
  • After arrival in Bhutan: 100% of the rates.

If you cancel your tour after you have sent payment then we will process your refund in accordance with the above list of charges.  To return funds to you from Bhutan we have to request permission from the Royal Monetary Authority to send foreign currency outside Bhutan.  Once we have this we have to ask the Tourism Council of Bhutan to return the funds to you, as they are still holding them at that point since your tour has not yet run.  This process of arranging the refund can take some time - at busy periods even 6 to 8 weeks.

Please note also that when your currency arrives in Bhutan it is booked to Blue Poppy in local currency at the then prevailing rate of exchange.  When we come to return funds to you the cost of the refund will be booked to us again at the then prevailing rate of exchange.  If there has been significant fluctuation in exchange rates between the date when funds were received in Bhutan and the date the payment is refunded we reserve the right to return no more than the then current US$ equivalent of the amount originally received by us in local currency, to avoid incurring a loss as a result of currency fluctuation when returning your funds for the cancelled trip.

We advise you take out insurance to cover the risk of having to cancel your trip for medical or other reasons - every year we have two or three groups who end up having to cancel after they have already paid for their trips, sometimes as little as a day or so before they fly, and it is an expensive venture if you don't have insurance to cover the costs incurred.
